How to clean Cedar Shingles (before and after photos!)

Hello! This is spencer with NWPROWASH showing a recent job we did which involved cleaning a cedar shake shingle roof here in Bainbridge Island, Wa.

This customer called us to help brighten and clean his roof which as you can see has many years of sun, rain, and weather adding to its greyish color.

We first started by blowing off all debris, lightly brushing away any bits of bulk moss, and then cleaning out the gutters.

This is all to prep for the chemical washing which we do with a mix of Sodium Percarbonate (oxygen bleach)

This is a gentler more eco friendly way to clean these types of shingles as normal bleach is harsher and can damage the lignin or the wood fibers themselves.

We soak down the whole roof and let the shingles absorb the wash and it will continue to brighten over time and look a decade newer!

Cedar can be a bit tricky as it gets very slippery when wet so safety equipment is important!

If you want us to take a look at your roof if you are in the Kitsap or Seattle area we can give you a free estimate or at least point you in the direction of what to do

That’s it for today from your local roof care experts, have a great day!
